mashed in maryland 2:50 Fri Aug 18 Re: London Pie & Mash Shops Anyone been to "Cockneys" in Ladbroke Grove? The name puts me off a bit but it's closer to the hotel and sites than anywhere else. ____ its great - real old school pie n mash shop. Huge vat Of mash on the go - salt of the earth types both sides of the counter. Alot of qpr go there now that cookes has shut - that place was pretty awesome and had a great history with The Who and all http://www.getwestlondon.co.uk/news/business/end-era-pie-shop-closes-9739495
Now of course the winds of change in the area with everywhere becoming a fucking fabric shop or bush meat ( geddit?±) parlour followed by gentrification means theyve gone forever

Used to be a great pie mash shop in Shepherds Bush green I was also suprised how good it was. Never thought Nathans was up to much was only popular because it was near the ground.IMHO.

Went cockneys in the end. Was decent. Far too much liquor though but no complaints.

Manzies pie shop on Tower Bridge Road is the best in London. No effing ice cream balls of mash it's just simply spread along the side of the plate with a wooden spoon the way it should be and the locals eat it with a fork and spoon. The only condiments being WHITE pepper and straight malt or chilli vinegar. Handsome. Also stewed eels if there your thing, though not mine a bit. Duncombes on Plashet Grove was memorable it was still very good when they later became Duncan's on Green Street obviously sadly gone. Robins have now got a few shops further east also good. Never knew pie shops existed in West London

About 35 years ago they sold the highest price side dish in the country, small plate of peas for two quid.
The Ritz was the cheapest, all sides were free.

Got to love WHO - people getting told to grow up as they're pretending to like something only really found in London.
I've no interest at all in food, but I do quite like a pie and mash, as I love putting a gallon of vinegar on it.
Visit Manzes a fair bit as it's 10 mins walk from work and Kelly's also occasionally. Prefer Kelly's of the two, but neither compare to the Heath Pie shop in Dagenham which has always been the best.

From memory, it was a Monday I tried Maureen's. That would explain why it was closed then!

'The one in Broadway market was becoming hipster-fied a year or so ago'
They fucking ruin everything. It'll be all corn fed chicken and foraged mushroom or artisan cheese and parsnip vegan pies with crushed sweet potatoes for 15 quid a pop before you know it....

Maureen's in Chrisp St isn't a 'noted' pie n mash shop i.e. doesn't do eels.
I know it used to be closed on Mondays. Used to go in there every day when I was at school bar Mondays where I would suffer the one along the front of East India Dock Rd (now East Enders I think)....staff in there were always moody as fuck and still were when I went in there before the Chelsea game last season.
